About Victor J. Thannickal, MD

Victor J. Thannickal, MD, is Professor of Medicine and the Harry B. Greenberg Chair of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, where he serves as Chair of the John W. Deming Department of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Oklahoma, followed by fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. Prior to joining Tulane in 2021, he held faculty and leadership positions at Tufts University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. An internationally recognized physician-scientist, Dr. Thannickal's research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of lung repair, regeneration, fibrosis, and aging. His work has advanced understanding of chronic lung diseases and contributed to the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting fibrotic disorders. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and has maintained continuous research support from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Thannickal is committed to mentorship and has trained numerous physician-scientists and biomedical researchers who now lead independent research programs across the United States. He is an elected member of the American Association of Physicians and the American Clinical and Climatological Association and is the recipient of the American Thoracic Society Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments. He serves on the editorial boards of several leading biomedical journals and is Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology. A Fellow of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation since 2012, Dr. Thannickal has served as Councilor, Chair of the Program Committee, and member of multiple SSCI committees before assuming the Society's presidency in 2026.
