About C. M. Wilcox, MD

Dr. Wilcox graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1983. He completed his internship and residency at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He also received his master’s in public health from UAB School of Public Health in 2007. Currently, Dr. Wilcox holds several academic positions at UAB, including professor of medicine and professor of surgery.

Dr. Wilcox has authored over 240 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and miscellaneous articles. His current research interests include includes the role of endoscopic therapy in the treatment of pancreaticobiliary diseases. He is a leading expert in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and disorders relating to pancreatiobiliary disease.

Dr. Wilcox has been serving as Professor of Medicine and the Division Director since joining University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2001. He is active in instruction with fellowship program as well as providing lectures and presentations on the treatment and procedures available for gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr. Wilcox has been a part of numerous educational and editorial boards, including serving as the editor-in-chief of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology from 2007-2012. Dr. Wilcox has authored the Atlas of Clinical Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, which is now in its third edition and has become the standard for educating trainees in endoscopy imaging. He has also served on the American Board of Internal Medicine Gastroenterology Subspecialty Board. Since 1994, Dr. Wilcox has had an active role in American Gastroenterological Association, having also served as secretary-elect and secretary on the AGA Institute Governing Board from 2002-2004.

Dr. Wilcox has been a member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation since 2011 and is member of Council. He presently serves on the Publications, Finance and Membership Committees. He also serves on the Editorial Board for The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, as section editor for Gastroenterology.
