About Charles V. Sanders, MD

Dr. Charles "Bo" Sanders has headed the Department of Medicine at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans since 1988, first as acting chair and then as Edgar Hull Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1989 to the present, making him the current longest reigning Chair of Medicine in the United States. From 1975 to 1989, Dr. Sanders was chief of the Section of Infectious Diseases at LSU. Dr. Sanders earned his medical degree at the LSU School of Medicine at New Orleans in 1964, simultaneously receiving a B.S. from Louisiana College. He then completed a one-year rotating internship followed by a three-year residency in internal medicine at the Confederate Memorial Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, and fellowship training in infectious diseases at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Hospital in Dallas. He joined the LSU faculty as an assistant professor in 1970 and was promoted to associate professor in 1975 and to professor in 1980.

Dr. Sanders is board certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and geriatrics. He has earned recognition as a specialist in infectious diseases and has extensive experience as a researcher and clinician, and he has authored or coauthored more than 130 scientific abstracts, over 170 original articles, and 30 book chapters, in addition to co-editing one textbook, The Skin and Infection: A Color Atlas and Text. His many honors include his being named Laureate of the Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Physicians in 1997 and receiving the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation's Founders' Award in 2008 and the Spirit of Charity Award in 2011. In addition, he had the distinction of having a chair dedicated in his name in 2009 by the LSU School of Medicine Committee of 100. In addition to his many administrative responsibilities as Chair of Medicine, Dr. Sanders is active in a number of professional societies, including his longstanding affiliation with the SSCI. Over the years, he has served the SSCI as a councilor from 2004-2009, a member of the Nominating Committee from 2003-2008, a member of the Membership Committee from 2004-present, chair of the Nominating Committee from 2011-2012, and a member of the Philanthropy Task Force from 2013-2014. In addition, he served as President-Elect from 2009-2010 and as President from 2010-2011.
