    About Fred A. Lopez, MD

    Dr. Lopez is the Richard Vial Professor and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine as well as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine-New Orleans. A native of New Orleans, he received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and his medical degree from LSU, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and a graduate of the Honors Program. He subsequently returned to Stanford University where he was an intern, resident and chief resident in Internal Medicine and a fellow in Infectious Diseases.

    He has written more than 125 journal articles and book chapters, and is co-editor of the textbook Infectious Diseases: Emergency Department Diagnosis & Management. He has received multiple awards recognizing his teaching and mentoring efforts, including the Copping Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is LSU Health Sciences Center's highest teaching award.

    In 2013, he was selected to become a Master of the American College of Physicians. He has been a member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation since 2004 and served as a member of the SSCI Council from 2010-2015. He presently serves (since 2009) as section editor of the Case Report/Focused Review series for The American Journal of the Medical Sciences.
