    About Gary S. Gilkeson, MD

    Dr. Gilkeson is a Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he is Associate Dean of Faculty Development for the School of Medicine. He is a staff physician at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Gilkeson received his undergraduate degree at Baylor University. He received his MD degree at the University of Texas Southwestern, and then conducted his clinical training in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After serving 4 years in the Air Force Medical Corp, he then completed rheumatology training at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Gilkeson served on faculty at Duke University until 1996 when he moved to MUSC.

    Dr. Gary Gilkeson's clinical and research interests are in the disease systemic lupus erythematosus. His studies range from population based studies of lupus and clinical trials of new drugs in lupus to molecular studies of gene activation in lupus. Dr. Gilkeson's focal interests are in sex differences and ethnic disparities in lupus studying the genetic/environmental interactions that lead to development of disease. He was the initiating investigator of the SLEIGH study that is "SLE in Gullah health". This is a study of the genetic/environmental/disease characteristics of lupus in the Sea Island African American population of South Carolina and Georgia compared to individuals in their ancestral home of Sierra Leone.

    Dr. Gilkeson has served as the Chair of the Lupus Foundation of America's Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee for approximately 10 years and serves on the LFA Board of Directors.

    Dr. Gilkeson has been a member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation since 2013 and presently serves as member of Council. Dr. Gilkeson also serves on the Membership and Mentoring Committees.
