About Martin A. Alpert, MD

Martin A. Alpert, MD received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1973. Thereafter, he completed a Residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine, and a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Missouri Medical Center. In 1979, he joined the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine as Assistant Professor of Medicine. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine with tenure at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1984, and was promoted to Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri in 1988. In 1990, he became Director of the Division of Cardiology and Professor of Medicine with tenure at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, positions he held until 2001. Thereafter, he served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, MO. He then returned to the University of Missouri-Columbia as Professor of Medicine in 2007 where he remains. In 2009, he was appointed Brent M. Parker Professor of Medicine. He currently serves as Director of the Fellowship Program in Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Dr. Alpert has received multiple teaching awards including an American College of Physicians Teaching and Research Scholarship (1980-83) and the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award in 1986 which is given to three faculty per year in the four campus University of Missouri system for "unusually significant and mentor teaching". He received the Golden Apple Award as outstanding faculty teacher from senior medical students at the University of Missouri-Columbia on 3 occasions (1977, 1986, and 1988). He received the same award on three occasions at the University of South Alabama (1992, 1993, and 1994). In 2013, he received the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from residents in the Department of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Dr. Alpert is author or co-author of 291 articles published in journals or books. He has authored or co-edited 3 books and 1 monograph. Much of his research has been focused on the relation of obesity to cardiac structure and function including its relation to heart failure.

He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and has received the Distinguished Fellow Award and the Hans-Peter Krayenbuehl Memorial Award from the International Academy of Cardiology. He is a member of the Central Society for Clinical Research. Dr. Alpert has been a member of 10 editorial boards (currently five), including those of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and the American Journal of Cardiology.

Dr. Alpert has been a member of the SSCI since 1993 and has served as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of the Medical Sciences since 1999. He is presently a section editor in the area of Cardiology.
